That all the world will be in love with night, and pay no worship to the garish sun.
- William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet
There is a certain romance in nightfall. Holding hands in the shadows, moving freely, unencumbered by daylight's harsh reality. Magic resides in the dead of night - senses are heightened and the world is seen through a different lens.
Hobart is once again retreating into the darkness for its annual winter solstice arts festival: Dark Mofo. Hosted by the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), Dark Mofo embraces the stretch after dusk with a 12 day celebration of art, music, food, culture, light and noise.
The 2016 lineup includes Hymns to the Dead (a selection of death metal bands from across the globe), the Nude Solstice Swim (held June 21, the morning after the longest night of the year), Dark Mofo’s annual Winter Feast and The Funeral Party – a gothic gala costume ball held in a funeral parlour.
Dark Mofo 2016 will run from June 10-21.
